Message on the death of Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa.
"I am shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa. He was a truly committed European and a founding father of the Economic and Monetary Union. Padoa-Schioppa played a key role in the launch of the ERM at the end of the 1970s. Later, in 1988, he was rapporteur of the Delors committee on the single currency. He was also Director General of the European Commission in DG II, the forerunner of DG ECFIN. After contributing decisively to the vision, the design and the launch of the euro, he developped an outstanding career at the ECB.
Most recently, I remember, in particular, his strong support to the legislative package to reinforce the economic governance that the Commission presented last May, as well as his support to the programme for Greece. Today, pursuing the work to reinforce our economic and monetary Union with determination is the best tribute we can offer to his memory."
