Vice-President Reding @ Davos: Justice for Growth and Data Protection Rights

As Vice-President of the European Commission, Viviane Reding will be the voice of the EU at the World Economic Forum 2011. EU Justice can do a lot for economic growth, and EU Justice Commissioner Reding is contributing to that end in Davos. She will discuss ways to enable European businesses to easily recover debts in other EU countries. This would boost investments in the single market, with businesses being more sure they will get their money back, 60% of which currently cannot be recovered. She will also discuss plans towards an optional European Contract Law. Business-to-consumer relations would benefit from this law, which could exist in parallel to national law, and would reduce burdens around cross-border payments and online commerce. 28 January is Data Protection Day, and in light of the 2011 Data Protection reform, Mrs. Reding will attend a session on cloud computing, meeting leading European and US technology companies. Modernised rules should reflect changes in technology, and clarifying legal certainties for cross-border services will have a profound impact on the ICT industry and strengthen users' data protection rights.
