Controlling your information, having access to your data, being able to modify or delete it – these are essential rights that must be guaranteed in today's digital world. The European Commission today set out a comprehensive strategy on how to strengthen data protection in all policy areas, including law enforcement, while guaranteeing the free circulation of data in the Single Market and reducing red tape for business. Legislative proposals will follow next year. "The protection of personal data is a fundamental right. We need clear and consistent data protection rules," said EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding.
