As guardian of the Treaties, the European Commission is determined to uphold EU law and will do so for all EU Member States – whether big or small.


21/09/2010 - Commission presents New Strategy on Gender Equality

The European Commission has adopted a five-year strategy for promoting equality between women and men in Europe. It aims to make better use of women's potential, thereby contributing to the EU's overall economic and social goals.

The strategy builds on the principles set out in the Commission's Women's Charter, translating them into specific measures which range from getting more women into company boardrooms to tackling gender-based violence.

"To get the engine of growth going again, Europe should make better use of women's talents," said Vice-President Viviane Reding.

06/09/2010 - Statement by EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding on the Roma situation in Europe

During the past few weeks, the situation of the Roma – the largest ethnic minority in the European Union – has attracted the attention of policy-makers at both national and EU levels. As EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, I have been closely following issues involving the Roma since I took office. I believe that the Roma are an important part of the population of the European Union, and that it is of paramount importance that they are well integrated into the societies of our Member States. On 7 April, on a joint initiative of László Andor, the EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, and myself, the European Commission adopted a Communication on the social and economic integration of Roma in Europe.
