26/05/2010 - Commissioner Reding presents plan for EU-US data protection deal

The Commission adopted a mandate to negotiate a new personal data protection agreement with the US. It will be the first time that the EU and the US negotiate together high data protection standards for their citizens whenever data is transferred and processed to fight crime and terrorism.


25/05/2010 - 25 May: International Missing Children's Day

In 2007, the Commission created the 116000, the European hotline number to report missing children and to offer guidance and support to their families, everywhere in Europe. On the occasion of International Missing Children's Day, Vice-President Viviane Reding urged EU Member States to step up their efforts to introduce child alert systems and make the missing children's hotline 116 000 operational as soon as possible.


21/05/2010 - European Commission seeks solutions on contract law

The European Commission has set up a new expert group to propose ways to improve contract law in the European Union. This would boost cross-border trade and ensure strong rights for consumers. The expert group just started its work.


20/05/2010 - Vice-President Reding at the Informal meeting of EU Ministers for Disability

"People with disabilities must enjoy the same fundamental freedoms as any citizen. Breaking down barriers is not just a matter of social welfare; businesses can benefit from offering services and equipment. Europe must lead in developing policies for disabled people", said Vice-President Viviane Reding at the Informal Disabilities Ministerial in Zaragoza.

07/05/2010 - Vice-President Reding celebrates Europe Day in Shanghai

To bring Europe closer to over 80 million people outside the EU, Vice-President Reding represented the European Commission in Shanghai (8 – 10 May) at the 2010 World Expo. She visited the exhibition and launched the Europe Day Festival on May 9.


03/05/2010 - Charter of Fundamental Rights

European Commissioners swore a solemn oath to respect the EU Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights on 3 May at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The oath shows the Commission's strong commitment to uphold and ensure the respect of fundamental rights in all EU policies.
