"Culture is the thread that links us together"
On Monday morning President Barroso participated at the opening of the 3rd edition of the European Culture Forum at the BOZAR Art in Brussels. In his keynote speech he said that "culture is the cement that binds Europe together. It is an essential part of the very foundations of our European project and must remain firmly entrenched in our ideals if we are to succeed in achieving a more united, stronger and open Europe."
President Barroso explained that the culture and creative industries account for up to 4.5% of the European GDP and for more than 8 million jobs, which have been resisting the financial crisis better than other sectors of our economies.
He added that the Commission has proposed a budget for the new Creative Europe programme of €1.8 billion. The agreed budget stands at 1.46 billion, which represents 9% increase of the current funding levels.
