The European Union is about solidarity, says President Barroso after meeting the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt
President Barroso received Dr Reiner Haseloff, Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt in Brussels. They discussed the recent floods in several European regions, including Saxony-Anhalt, and potential support from the European Union.
After hearing from Minister-President Haseloff about the extent of the damages caused in Saxony-Anhalt, President Barroso expressed, once again, his sympathy with the people affected. He also gave his appreciation of the efforts of the local and national services, including the many volunteers.
He reassured the Minister-President about the Commission's commitment to provide assistance to affected countries and regions through the existing and future EU programmes, while pointing out that the mobilisation of the European Union Solidarity Fund requires a national application, based on a d needs assessment, before it can be transmitted to the Council and the European Parliament for final approval. He strongly reminded of the fact that the European Union is also about showing solidarity, including with richer countries.
