The European Union marks the African Union's 50th anniversary


President Barroso today attends the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Organisation of African Unity was created by 32 African countries in 1963. On behalf of the European Union, President Barroso is attending an event in Addis Ababa to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this occasion - the creation of the African Union (AU).

Throughout these last decades Africa has been transforming itself for the better and the AU has played a central role in African regional integration, leading “African solutions for African challenges".

President Barroso is expected to reaffirm the EU's consistent and continued support to the African Union Commission, to Africa’s integration, and to their bilateral partnership.
