Montenegro at "crucial moment" on path towards EU
President Barroso has welcomed the decision by Milo Đukanović, Prime Minister of Montenegro, to keep European integration at the top of the country's agenda. The President also encouraged Mr Đukanović to accelerate momentum towards reform.
"The opening of accession negotiations last June marked a new chapter in our relations. It was a fair recognition of the progress that Montenegro had made," said President Barroso following Monday's meeting. "It was also an important signal to the rest of the region, confirming that its European perspective is a reality and that sustained and credible reforms pay off".
He stressed that Montenegro must build on what has been achieved and continue reform efforts, particularly in terms of the constitution and the independence of the judiciary. Further reforms in areas such as rule of law and fundamental rights, and combatting corruption and organised crime, are also key to the country's success on its path towards Europe.
