Next Multiannual EU budget must be focused on growth and jobs
At their meeting on Tuesday, President Barroso and President of the Economic and Social Committee Mr Nilsson agreed that the EU budget for the period 2014 – 2020 should reflect its potential to make a very significant contribution to generating growth and jobs in Europe.
President Barroso urged the members of the Economic and Social Committee to back such a budget, known as the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), in ongoing debates in their home countries: "In the end all 27 member states are net-beneficiaries of their membership and this should be made clear," said President Barroso.
The President also briefed President Nilsson about the outcome of the European Council last week. Discussions on the follow-up to the Rio 2020 conference were also held, focused on the importance of mainstreaming environmental sustainability in all EU policies.
