Presidents Barroso and Hollande meet before the European summit.
During a very cordial meeting, the two presidents exchanged their points of view on the main European issues, such as the negotiations under way on the future financial framework of the European Union for 2014–2020, and the economic situation.
With regard to the future budgetary framework of the European Union for 2014–2020, presidents Barroso and Hollande agreed on the decisive role which the European budget could and should play as a lever for growth and employment, with clear political priorities and targeted investment.
President Barroso also emphasised that future investment in research and innovation and the financing of large pan-European networks aimed at 'connecting Europe' are essential. He also noted the added value of common policies and a cohesion policy.
He was very pleased to share with President Hollande the 'determination to work towards a result which all the Member States could support at the European Council next week'.
President Barroso highlighted the importance of the active and constructive contribution of France in the negotiations on the Single Banking Supervisory Mechanism with a view to reaching an agreement before the end of the year.
