President Barroso and Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy exchange views on Spanish and EU budgets
Ahead of the European Council on 22 and 23 November, the leaders stressed the importance of the EU budget for creating conditions for investment to growth and jobs in Europe. On Spain, they both welcomed that Spain has taken effective measures correcting its excessive deficit.
President Barroso expressed his appreciation for significant efforts that the government and the Spanish people are making to ensure the sustainability of public finances - efforts that are assuming major sacrifices for a large part of the population - and to boost competitiveness of the Spanish economy.
"The European Commission is using all the tools at its disposal to restore growth in Europe and thus create jobs and address the serious social problems currently facing European citizens," said President Barroso.
