Commission welcomes Nobel laureates' initiative urging EU leaders to invest in research and innovation
President Barroso has welcomed a delegation led by Nobel laureates Sir Tim Hunt and Professor Jules Hoffman. They have presented to him an open letter that emphasises the importance of EU research funding and warns against the consequences of budget cuts in this area.
The letter was signed by 44 Nobel laureates and 6 Fields medallists. More than 130 000 people from Europe and around the globe added their signature to the call.
President Barroso said: "I very much welcome the support ... One euro invested in research and innovation at European level has a bigger impact than a euro spent at national level. That is why the European Commission has proposed a substantial increase in research funding for the next EU budget, through the Horizon 2020 programme. We call on EU leaders to listen to this initiative and agree an ambitious, growth-oriented future budget at the special European Council meeting of 22-23 November."
