Agreement on support for the most deprived in Europe
President Barroso praised the support of the European Federation of Food Banks and five charitable organisations for the Commission proposal to create a fund to help the most deprived persons in the Union.
The proposal was adopted by the Commission on 24 October 2012. ‘It is now the responsibility of the Member States and the European Parliament to quickly adopt this proposal and the associated budget, so that those who need help may benefit from it as soon as possible. I am therefore counting on the European Federation of Food Banks and other charitable organisations to express their support for this proposal to the Member States and the Parliament’, declared the president.
The Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived would support Member State schemes providing food to the most deprived people as well as clothing and other essential goods to homeless people and materially deprived children. The Commission foresaw a budget of EUR 2.5 billion for the fund during the period from 2014 to 2020 as part of its June 2011 proposal for a Multiannual Financial Framework.
