DIE EU AUF DEM G20
President Barroso represented the EU together with the rotating presidency of the Council at this first ever G20 summit, which focused on financial markets and the world economy.
After the summit, President Barroso said "we have begun laying the foundations for a new global governance: for a global social market economy, with the European Union acting as its precursor", while he noted that there are no "miracle solutions". "In the globalised, interdependent and open world we now live in, we can turn crisis into opportunity."
He also detailed the general agreement achieved between G20 leaders on how to cooperate in key areas so as to strengthen economic growth, deal with the financial crisis, and laid the foundation for reform to avoid similar crises in the future.
He stressed that the leaders committed to openness, to rejecting protectionism, and to striving to reach agreement the same year on modals which would allow a successful conclusion of the Doha round for trade and development.
"We now need to act on them very quickly – and make history," he concluded.
