Commissioner Piebalgs attends UNICEF Executive Board in New York
EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs has attended the UNICEF Executive Board on the 4 February 2014 in New York, where he has delivered a special address. As part of the visit, the Commissioner has meet with Anthony Lake, Executive Director of UNICEF, with the aim of reinforcing their joint work in helping partner countries to reach the Millennium Development Goals, specifically those related to children. Together, they announced €320 million for projects which will be implemented by UNICEF to improve the health and nutrition of children and women in 15 developing countries.
The funding will promote child survival by tackling under-nutrition and infectious diseases, which are among the root causes of child mortality. Ahead of the UNICEF Executive Board in New York, Commissioner Piebalgs said: “Much remains to be done before the 2015 deadline for achieving the MDGs and these projects will help us build on the achievements made so far."
