Commissioner Piebalgs participates in the Donor Conference for Development in Mali
Entitled “Together for a New Mali”, this high-level event is organised jointly by the European Union and France in close collaboration with Mali. The event aims to give a big boost to the development priorities of the Sahel country which has been hit by drought, hunger and conflict.
The main deliverable of the conference is a generous and comprehensive "Plan for the Sustainable Revival of Mali" for 2013-2014. The contribution of the European Commission will reach 520 million EUR in development assistance.
During the opening speech, Commissioner Piebalgs highlighted, "We are here to show our solidarity with Mali, and to the people of Mali. It is not just a matter of rebuilding the country. We must accompany the profound reforms with the renovation of the Malians expectations", and added "With the financing agreements that the European Union will sign with the Malian government today, we will provide better access to water, sanitation, health, justice, education for hundreds of thousands of Malians. Thanks to the public investment that we will start, around 20 000 jobs will be created in the next two years. "
