New EU support for access to clean water and sanitation in Malawi

The European Commission has announced that it will support Malawi in its efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) related to water and sanitation. The new programme will be focussed on the most vulnerable population in 15 districts and 7 cities, who have limited access to water and sanitation.

Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs and Vice President of the Commission Olli Rehn will sign today a Memorandum of Understanding between the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the EU to further enhance their cooperation, with the aim of improving the economic and social development of the Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Over €27 million to improve access to basic services for the people of Darfur

European Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs announced today €27.5 million to support people's access to basic services (such as education and health), as well as water management and agriculture in Darfur, a region in Western Sudan. The funding was announced by the European Union during the International Donors Conference for Darfur, which is being held in Doha (7 - 8 April).
Commissioner Piebalgs to discuss future development cooperation with the Pacific countries

Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs will participate this week (4-5 April) in a high level meeting to discuss priorities of the EU-Pacific cooperation for the coming years. The event will bring together high level representatives from 14 Pacific countries in Apia, Samoa.

Aid figures released by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) today show that the European Union and its 27 Member States remained the world's largest donor in 2012, providing more than half of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) reported by Development Assistance Committee (DAC).
