On 20 April 2010 the explosion on a drilling rig "Deepwater Horizon" in the Gulf of Mexico led to eleven deaths and a major fire. (...). As waters off EU shores are in parts intensively exploited for the production of oil and gas and more exploration is taking place, the EU has a vital interest in taking all necessary steps to prevent a similar disaster. Although the investigation to the causes of the accident is still underway, some first lessons can already been drawn and acted upon.
