A new proposal on nuclear safety

With 132 nuclear reactors in operation in 14 EU member countries, the safety of power generation from nuclear energy is vital for all Europeans.

The Commission's proposal amending the nuclear safety directive of 2009 takes into account the lessons learned from Fukushima as well as those from the EU-wide stress tests following that nuclear accident. It also aligns the EU's nuclear safety framework with technical progress achieved on international level. It sets out safety objectives, which have to be followed across the EU to significantly reduce risks thereby protecting people and the environment.
