At a global forum on migration issues in Stockholm, Sweden, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström spoke about the need for a global agenda for labour mobility.
"It would help us address unnecessary bureaucratic barriers migrants face, so that they can move more easily to countries where they are needed", Malmström said.
As a concrete example of what could be done at global level, Malmström raised the idea of a global system for mutual recognition of education and skills in her speech.
"We have to stop wasting human resources and allow people to make best use of their talents... Think about the benefits it could bring for a migrant if they could have their qualifications and skills recognised in the country to which they move, even if they cannot speak the language at first", Malmström said.
Sweden is hosting the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) from 14 to 16 May. The meeting kicked off on 14 May with a opening ceremony attended by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, Swedish Minister for Migration Tobias Billström among others. Around 900 delegates representing 150 governments, as well as observers and non-governmental organisations, are attending the forum.
