Strenghened ties between EU and key migration organisation

8 november 2011

Through a new agreement signed this Thursday, the European Commission and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) strengthened their cooperation, scrapping bureaucratic barriers between the two actors. The European Commission and EU Member States are major contributors to the IOM, and through the new agreement, signing off on new joint projects is made easier.

As there will no longer be a need to renegotiate the financial details of each new joint project, the cooperation process is streamlined and simplified. The Commission and the IOM are already working together on projects like helping migrants in the deserts of North Africa, as well as reintegrating migrants who wish to return to their home countries and projects dealing with migrants' rights.

"This new agreement will facilitate day-to-day cooperation between our two organisations, will remove bureaucratic hurdles, and make our work together much more efficient," said Commissioner Cecilia Malmström in a comment.

The agreement was signed at the European Commission in Brussels by Malmström and IOM Director General William Lacy Swing. Read the full press release here.
