Working together for a better Internet for children

Yesterday was Safer Internet Day – with thousands of events in over 100 countries, all about ensuring a safer and better internet for younger people.

So here's my message to all those who celebrated:

Two points from me.

First, ensuring this better internet for children is all about working together.

What the EU can and can't do about "112" emergency services

"Member States are responsible to set caller location criteria and the Commission is urging them to bring these criteria in line with the technological solutions available on the market. Since it’s the sole responsibility of the Member States authorities the Commission does not have the power to set the criteria. This has been recognised also by the European Parliament. In its recent opinion on the Connected Continent proposal IMCO committee has proposed to enhance competences of the Commission."

Fair Play – my blog on the Sochi Winter Olympics

Until a few years ago, I used to ice skate in the winter – when it was cold enough. Making beautiful trips across the ice of frozen lakes, gliding amid the beautiful Dutch landscape. Ice skating has an enchanting, and also somewhat addictive effect. Even on TV. So, over the next few days I will be fascinated, watching the Olympic team perform in Sochi, Russia. Indeed, the Netherlands is one of the top countries in ice skating. Over and over again, great talents arise, both men and women.

Checking out the Greek startup scene

Ensuring Jobs for the Future - my blog from Davos

Last week was the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. While some media like to focus on the party lifestyles of the rich and glamorous — for me it's an opportunity to get down to work. I'm determined to make a difference – and together at this event are the people who have the power to do that; including the younger, emerging generation of business and tech leaders.

Today, 28 January, is Data Protection Day. Commemorating the signing of a Convention 33 years ago today, the day aims to promote awareness and education of privacy issues.

The European Parliament supporting your consumer rights in a connected continent

Today the European Parliament's Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Rights voted on my proposals for a Telecoms Single Market: I welcome that vote, and I particularly thank the rapporteur Malcolm Harbour for steering it through the Committee so efficiently.

Transforming healthcare: I meet the people making it happen

Europe is facing a healthcare crunch as populations get older; our systems need to adapt if we want citizens who can stay active and healthy for longer.

New study shows huge importance of a functioning digital single market

A new report out today highlights the importance of broadband and the EU single market in stimulating vital economic growth – and sets out the need for European capacity in broadband infrastructure, cloud computing, big data, digital skills and other ICT-related areas.

First things first - a guest blog from Greece

A few weeks ago, Greece took on the EU Presidency. And, in a visit there last week, I got to meet some of the many vibrant players on the Greek startup scene.
