Road Transport: Vice President Kallas welcomes key step towards agreement on Eurovignette

24/05/2011

Vice President Kallas today welcomed the progress achieved by the European Parliament and the Council on the proposal to review the Eurovignette Directive on 23 May 2011. The future legislation will enable Member States to charge heavy duty vehicles for the cost of air and noise pollution that they cause. The EP and Council in a Trialogue meeting have achieved significant progress towards clarifying how the revenues generated would be used for instance to finance the trans-European network infrastructure projects which contribute to make transport more sustainable.

European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for Transport, said: "There is real progress, and I am very hopeful we can achieve a final deal with a positive vote from the Parliament in June. These new rules will make a very concrete step towards applying the polluter pays principle to transport and making transport cleaner, less congested and more energy efficient.."
