EU welcomes Australia's readiness to join second Kyoto period
The EU welcomes Australia's recent confirmation that it is ready to sign up to a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. This would mean Australia joining Europe in taking on a binding target under the world’s only treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, said: “We first linked our carbon schemes, now Australia joins us in the second Kyoto Protocol period. This is great news! Good to see the family of 2nd commitment period countries growing.”
Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Sofoclis Aletraris, whose country holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, said: "The global climate challenge is not getting away – it is good to see another country joining us in doing our part in a legally binding effort, within the framework of Kyoto Protocol to meet the challenge. I hope others will follow this example and act.”
