Connie Hedegaard: "The Commission's economic recommendations to Member State are climate mainstreaming in practice"
On 30 May, the European Commission adopted a package of recommendations to Member States for budgetary measures and economic reforms. Commenting on this package, Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard stated:
"The economic recommendations which the Commission has presented to Member States is climate mainstreaming in practice. They show that energy efficiency and intelligent taxation shifts have really become part of mainstream economic thinking.
Seventeen of the 27 Member States are advised by the Commission to carry out climate and energy-related reforms – most prominently, taxation shifts from labour towards resources and energy, improved energy systems and increased energy efficiency measures to create jobs, also in the short term.
The course plotted by the Commission is clear – now it is up to Member States to follow up on the recommendations."
