Commissioner Hedegaard today met with Greg Combet, Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and Industry and Innovation, to advance work towards linking the Australian and European emissions trading systems.

“We are working to strengthen the international carbon market, enabling effective climate action across the world at least cost,” Commissioner Hedegaard said.

Minister Combet emphasised the priority Australia attaches to linking their scheme to the EU's. "The EU ETS is the largest emissions trading scheme in the world. Together, the schemes will provide access to a wider range of options for cost-effective emission reduction,” he said.

The work plan agreed by Commissioner Hedegaard and Minister Combet will guide further discussions on linking the two systems, and the development of international carbon markets generally, to take place within the Australia-Europe Senior Officials Talks on Climate Change.
