Connie Hedegaard: "The CAP reform presented today is an important step forward"
Connie Hedegaard welcomed the Commission's agriculture proposal presented today as "an important step forward not only for European agriculture but also for global climate change policy."
And she explained: "With the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the Commission sets an important principle: public money for public goods. That means that 30% of direct subsidies will be conditional upon greener farming practices such as crop diversification or maintenance of permanent pasture, as well as ensuring that at least 7% of farmland is maintained as ecological reserves or landscapes. Added to this, at least 25% of the rural development funds will be used for climate-related projects."
