Connie Hedegaard: "The EU shares your frustration in the international climate talks"
In view of the UN climate conference (COP17) which will take place in Durban, South Africa, at the end of the year, an AOSIS (Alliance of Small Islands States) minister, frustrated with the slow progress of the negotiations, asked Connie Hedegaard: "Is it worth going to Durban?". "I encouraged him to go to the pre-COP informal ministerial meeting in Cape Town on 20-21 October and express his frustration publicly", said the Commissioner.
And she added: "The EU shares his frustration. The AOSIS and EU agree on the necessity to seal an internationally legally binding deal. But it will only happen if the most vulnerable use their voice to put the pressure on the big emitters that have not yet moved enough".
