Trentino Alto Adige

The region Trentino Alto Adige is composed of the Autonomous Province of Bozen (South Tyrol) and the Autonomous province of Trento (Trentino). It is located in the Northern part of Italy. It covers around 13.600 km2, basically alpine highlands and Dolomites mountainous areas. The economy of the region has long been seen as highly “green-oriented”, mainly towards renewable energy sources, green building and sustainable tourism. [Read More]



The Alentejo region of southern Portugal has around 758.700 inhabitants and its area represents roughly one third of the Portuguese territory. In 2009, its GDP per capita was 72.2% of the EU average and its relative weight in the Portuguese GDP is 6.4%.[Read More]


Central Macedonia

Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn will be in Greece on 19-20th October to outline the most effective way to use EU Regional Funds for growth in the EU's next long-term budget. He will also travel to Central Macedonia where he will meet members of the business community in Northern Greece to assess the impact of regional funds on the ground and with the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr Jannis Boutaris.[Read More]



Commissioner Hahn is travelling to the Podlaskie region ("Voivodeship") in Poland on 4 October 2012 to visit EU co financed projects and to attend the 40th Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions General Assembly. He will also meet with Ms Elzbieta Bienkowska, Polish Minister for Regional Development, in Warsaw.[Read More]

South Moravia

South Moravia is one very dynamic region in territorial cooperation, especially with the Austrian neighbouring region Lower Austria. Lower Austria

The EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, welcomed representatives of the state parliament of Lower Austria to Brussels on 4 September to discuss regional policy in the next programme period 2014-2020. [Read More]


Epirus Epirus is a region in northwestern Greece. It is divided into four regional units, Arta, Ioannina, Preveza and Thesprotia. The region has an area of about 9,200 km2. With a population of 350.000, GDP per capita in Epirus is 64% of the EU average (2010 figures), the Epirus region shares borders with Albania. The capital of Epirus is Ioannina.[Read More]

Danube Strategy

Danube Region Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn is making a tour of the Danube region from 27 June to 1 July, one year after the launch of the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region (Danube Strategy). During the tour which comprises seven countries -in chronological order: Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria-, the Commissioner will meet high-level political representatives as well as stakeholders and pay visits to flagship projects of the Strategy. He will also participate in the celebrations of the Danube Day on 29 June in Belgrade.[Read More]

EU Strategy for the Baltic Region

Baltic Sea Region On 18 June Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn attended the third Annual Forum on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region held jointly with the 14th Baltic Development Forum Summit in Copenhagen on 18-19 June. The Commissioner also attended the 'Networking and Project Village' of the Forum, where flagship projects of this macro-region will showcase their activities.[Read More]

North Rhine–Westphalia

North Rhine–Westphalia With a population of approximately 17.8 million, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is the most populous federal state of the Federal Republic of Germany, and with an area of 34,080 km2 it is the fourth-largest federal state. With a share of approximately 22 % of the German gross domestic product (GDP), North Rhine-Westphalia is also the federal state with the highest economic output, and in 2009 its GDP per person was 16 % above the EU average.[Read More]


Sardinia Commissioner Hahn is travelling to Sardinia on 4 June 2012. There he will meet with Mr Fabrizio Barca, Italian Minister for Regional Development, to discuss issues related to the Italian programmes under the current period and the preparation of the future regional policy programmes 2014-2020. The Commissioner will also meet with Mr Ugo Cappellacci, President of the Regional Government of Sardinia, to discuss the state of play of cohesion policy in the island. [Read More]


Croatia Commissioner Johannes Hahn is in Croatia on 24 and 25 May to meet the new national authorities after the December 2011 elections - the President, the Prime Minister and Members of the Government as well as Members of the Parliament. Since Croatia will most probably join the EU in July 2013, Croatia will have full access to Cohesion policy for 6 months in the current programming period 2007-2013.[Read More]

Die Steiermark

Styria On the occasion of the celebration of Europe Day on 9 May, the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, will be in the Austrian federal province of Styria. He will be making a speech there on regional partnerships in Europe in a conference entitled ‘Croatia – the 28th EU Member State’ organised by the Bundesrat (the upper house of the Austrian parliament) and the state parliament (Landtag) of Styria.[Read More]

West Wales and the Valleys

West Wales and the Valleys

Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn will be visiting Wales on 19-20 April. He will meet with First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones and other members of the Welsh Government. He will visit four EU co-financed project in Neath Port Talbot and Swansea. [Read More]



Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn will be visiting Lithuania on 29th March. He will meet with H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, Andrius Kubilius, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania and other members of the Lithuanian Government. He will visit one EU financed project in Vilnius University Hospital „Santariškių klinikos" as well.[ Read More]



Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn is in Prague on 22-23 March to meet Czech Prime Minister Mr Petr Necǎs as well as several Members of the Czech Government. He will also participate in an informal meeting of the Ministers for Regional Development of the V4 group and Slovenia and attend a conference of the Future of Regional Policy. [Read More]



The Region of Galicia is located in the Northwest of Spain, borders with Portugal to the South and with the Spanish Regions of Asturias and Castilla y León to the East. It covers a total area of 29,574 km2 and has a population of 2.736.636 inhabitants. [Read More]



Commissioner Hahn is in Slovenia on 8 March to meet Prime Minister Janez Janša and several members of the government in charge of implementing EU-funded programmes. [Read More]



The Madrid Region is located at the geographic centre of the Iberian Peninsula and it borders the Autonomous Communities of Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y Leon. It covers an area of 8030.1 km2 and it has 6,489,680 inhabitants.

Madrid has a dynamic economy that represents more than 17.7% of Spain's GDP.[Read More]



Commissioner Johannes Hahn will visit the Republic of Cyprus on 24th February 2012. The main purpose of his second visit to Cyprus is to discuss the priorities for the Cypriot Presidency of the European Union in July-December 2012. Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester (United Kingdom)

The area of Greater Manchester falls within the North West region of England. The city of Manchester has a population of around ½ million and is within the county of Greater Manchester (population circa 2.6m).
Greater Manchester will be represented at the Urban Forum on 16th February in Brussels by Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council who will present examples for innovative actions for sustainable urban development in this region. [Read more]

Noord-Brabant (The Netherlands)

Commissioner Hahn will visit Noord-Brabant on 3 February. During his visit, he will attend a special session of the provincial parliament (Provinciale Staten) which will focus on the future of regional policy and he will meet several regional and national policymakers while visiting ERDF co-financed projects on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Regiunea Sud-East (Romania)

Located in the South-East of Romania, the South-East Region is a convergence region made from 6 counties: Braila, Buzau, Constanta, Galati, Tulcea and Vrancea, having a polycentric development of territory, with a population of roughly 3 million inhabitants (13% of total population). The South-East Region has a per capita GDP of 39% of the EU-27 average in 2008. [Read more]

Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion
Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion/EGTC The Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion was established in October 2004 and is a political cooperation project between the Spanish autonomous communities of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands and the French regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées.
