On Sunday 22 January Commissioner attended the inauguration ceremony of the new Bulgarian President Rossen Plevneliev. He also met with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Tomislav Donchev, Minister responsible for EU funds. In the afternoon the Commissioner attended signing ceremony between Bulgaria, the European Investment Bank, the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
During the meeting with Prime Minister Borissov and Minister Donchev various issues were discussed, like the latest developments on the absorption of structural funds, the preparation for the next programming period (2014-20) or the Danube Strategy.
The signing the Memoranda of Understanding between Bulgaria and three important International Financial Institutions is an important step towards speeding-up absorption of Funds and maximising its impact on the Bulgarian economy. The institutions will send experts to Bulgaria to help national officials in handling EU procedures for regional development projects in order to increase the concrete and correct use of EU funding.

Visiting the Austrian region of Salzburg on Tuesday 9 August, Commissioner Johannes Hahn and his colleague Günther Oettinger, Commissioner for Energy, got an explanation on investments in energy efficiency and sustainable environmental protection done at the Leube Cement Works in Salzburg, by company manager and President of the regional Chamber of Industry Mr. Rudolf Zrost.

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn visited the Austrian region of Salzburg on Monday 8 August. Accompanied by Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas (right) Johannes Hahn got an explanation on the new railway station of Salzburg City from Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Railways Christian Kern (left) and Governor of the Region of Salzburg Mrs. Gabi Burgstaller. Salzburg's main railway station is served by the new Tauern railway link, which has been co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, went to the Vassilikos power station to survey the damage caused by devastating explosions on 13 July. On that day, a series of explosions occurred at "Evangelos Florakis" naval base near Larnaca, 60 km from the capital Nicosia. 12 people were killed and many more injured. The explosion affected the production of electricity on the island and the water supply.
