Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn was in Innsbruck on 17 September at the Conference "Auf dem Weg zur EU-Alpenraumstrategie" (On the way to an EU Strategy for the Alpine Region) where he delivered a speech. This conference took place during the online public consultation on the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region which was launched on 16 July and aims at tapping into the opinions of relevant stakeholders and gathering their ideas in order to ensure that the Strategy is realistic in its starting point, appropriate in its objectives and responsive to the real needs of inhabitants of the Region.

The Commissioner stessed the need to prioritise and focus on concrete results for the Strategy and that a broad participation during the public consultation is necessary. He also emphasized that a visible political leadership is required in order to implement the Strategy efficiently.

The EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) covers some 70 million people in 7 countries – 5 of them EU Member States (Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia) and 2 non-EU countries (Liechtenstein and Switzerland), all-in-all covering some 48 regions. It is set to tak eshape in 2015.
