Using EU Regional Funds to create lasting jobs in Italy: Commissioner Hahn lays out the urgent challenge in Rome

On 27-28 May in Rome EU Regional Affairs Commissioner Johannes Hahn called on national ministers, regional representatives and civil servants from across Italy to improve the way regional funds are managed. He urged them to act urgently so EU investments, one of Italy's only sources of public investment in the current crisis, can support job creation and growth : in particular to tackle youth unemployment which is currently running at 40 %.

Commissioner Hahn delivered the key note speech at the Forum of Public Administration's "Towards Europe 2020" conference.

He was joined by Italy' s new Minister for Territorial Cohesion Carlo Trigilia. The challenge to use around €31 billion of current investments, as well to use future investments under the reformed Regional Policy for 2014-20 with far greater focus, were the key themes of his two day visit to Italy.

Commissioner Hahn pointed to the problem of weak administrations as a major obstacle. He called for politicians and civil servants to build on recent improvements. He met Members of the new Government as well as the Presidents of the regions of Lazio and Calabria.
