Commissioner Hahn urges quick action to rebuild

Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn paid a visit to the site of “Città della Scienza” in Bagnoli, Naples, today to take stock of the damages caused by a large fire on March 4.  Buildings have been destroyed the 500 people working there are now unemployed.

In the presence of Stefano Caldoro, the President of the Campania Region, and Luigi De Magistris, the Mayor of Naples, the Commissioner expressed the Commission's commitment to take part in the huge solidarity movement generated at national and international level after the fire:

"I am here to see with my own eyes the situation to better understand what happened. It is up to the national and regional authorities to apply for financial support. The reconstruction is very important. Everything that comes to innovation and competitiveness is extremely welcome. This is why we have already financed activities in the “Città della Scienza”. I hope the reconstruction can start soon; we are ready and at disposal not only from an emotional point of view but also in financial terms. As regards the location, I think that we have to respect the principle of subsidiarity and let the responsible authorities decide. I urged the authorities to find a quick solution in order not to risk the jobs there".

“Città della Scienza” is a pioneering science museum attracting some 350 000 visitors per year and hosting innovative Small and Medium Sized Enterprises working in the ICT and environment sectors. It was built on a former steelworks area and many of its activities like exhibitions and the setting up of the innovation agency were co funded by EU structural funds. The destruction has been perceived by citizens as a loss of a "national emblem" of rehabilitation and revitalization of disaffected areas.
