Commissioner Hahn meets eight MEPs from the Outermost Regions

On 4 December, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn met with eight Members of the European Parliament from the Outermost Regions. This group, called "Conference of the MEPs from the Outermost Regions of the European Parliament", came to discuss with the Commissioner the state of play of the current negotiations on the future EU regional policy framework for 2014-2020, and notably on the specific provisions for Outermost Regions earmarked by the Commission in June 2012. The process of Mayotte’s change of status to outermost region in 2014 was also an issue.

Commissioner Hahn stressed that the modernisation and diversification of the economies of the Outermost Regions are key for them to become more self-reliant and better able to create growth and jobs in line with the Europe 2020 strategy. To pursue this aim, the Commissioner encouraged the MEPs to work hand in hand with the Commission and the national and the regional authorities for the preparation of the next generation of programmes for the Outermost Regions.
