"I am really pleased that Latvia has embraced our investment approach for the new period", says Commissioner Hahn in Riga

(06 June 2014)

Commissioner for Regional Policy was in Latvia on 4-5 June. On 4th June he went to Jelgava where he visited some EU funded projects together with Mayor Andris Ravins the Jelgava biomass CHP plant, the Mitavas pedestrian bridge and the Trinity church tower.

On 5 June, he opened the conference "Quality of life" together with Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma where he gave a speech on the reformed Cohesion Policy.

Extracts of Commissioner Hahn's speech:

"Since joining the European Union in May 2004, Latvia has benefited from support by Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund. This has been of particular significance since it meant that you were not alone when the financial crisis hit your country....In fact, Cohesion Policy funds were the main stimulus for the Latvian economy during the crisis. Between 2009 and 2011, support from the Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund represented almost 53% of the total public investment in Latvia".

"(The) European Commission and Latvia we are now in the process of finalising the Partnership Agreement. I hope that it will be possible to adopt it in the next few weeks."

"I am really pleased that Latvia has embraced our investment approach for the new period. This is evident from the way Latvia is planning to invest the funds from Cohesion Policy to increase its economic productivity, to achieve excellence in R&D and Innovation, to establish sustainable and efficient transport systems and to promote sustainable use of natural resources. Latvia also plans to complement these with measures to create employment in an inclusive society and to invest in quality and efficiency in the education system."

The Commissioner finally visited another EU funded manufacturing plant “Hansa Electronics” Ogre.
