Commissioner Hahn at the London School of Economics: From Subsidy to Strategic Investment: what can the EU's new, reformed Regional Policy do for growth and jobs in 2014-2020?

Commissioner Johannes Hahn was taking part in a public debate and question and answer session at the LSE Europe Institute chaired by Professor Iain Begg,

In the course of the discussion Commissioner Johannes Hahn said: "To achieve European goals, like fighting climate change and creating jobs we need a financial incentive – and that is EU Regional Policy. EU funds are not free money which can be spent indiscriminately. Our reforms ensure that they must be spent on commonly agreed principles".

"Future EU regional Policy takes a more strategic appraoch to improve performance in the EU's regions" in this next period the EU is taking a much more coordinated approach to Stuctural and investment funds – reducing overlaps and identifying gaps."

Speaking to the audience in London Commissioner Hahn added " In preparing our new policy British civil servants played an eminent role and their contribution was valuable – in line with the UK's own objectives"
