EU Commissioner Hahn in Serbia: Solidarity in Action

On the occasion of his visit to Serbia on 24 May, Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, met PM Vucic, FM Dacic and ministers to discuss the aid measures via the European Solidarity Fund. After the meeting with the government the Commissioner visited the cities which were most badly hit by the disastrous floods, Obrenovac and Sabac.

The Commissioner stated: "I have come to Serbia to express on behalf of the European Union and the whole European Family my deepest sympathy and solidarity with the Serbian people. I am shocked and sad to witness the dimension of the disaster and the human suffering behind. For the European Union solidarity is not just a word. This is why all relevant Commission Services are working hard to establish a coordinated and efficient approach to deliver the urgently needed support. After the first aid measures delivered by the European Civil Protection Mechanism, we can offer support via the European Solidarity Fund (EUSF) which is under my competence. Besides my services will provide expertise to ensure a sound damage assessment and quick submission of obligation. With regard to the EUSF Serbia, which has already started its accession negotiations with the EU, is treated like a Member State.

The Commissioner closed his words by saying: "I can assure the Serbian people: You are not alone but can count on the solidarity of the European Family. This applies also for Bosnia-Herzegovina and other countries hit by disasters."
