Commissioner Hahn tells Serbia : you can rely on the EU

In the wake of the devasting floods in Serbia, Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn, who oversees the European Solidarity Fund (EUSF) met with Ivica Dacic, Serbia Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ms. Jadranka Joksimovic, Minister in charge of portfolio for EU integration.

At the top of the agenda was how the EU can help with the EUSF – designed to help countries and regions recover and meet the costs of rescue and recovery after major diasters. Serbia has said it will apply for it.

After the meeting Commissioner Hahn said : "We have been exchanging ideas on how we can help. I have to stress when it comes to the use of the European Solidarity Fund, Serbia is already treated like a Member State. There is no difference. It is on an equal footing. Europe is indeed already at Serbia's side. Serbia is already treated like a family member and Serbia can rely on the support of the European Union."

The Commissioner also said that it seems clear that if the figures are confirmed, the effect of the flooding would qualify Serbia as a country hit by a national major disaster and therefore Serbia would be eligible for support, but he stressed it was too early to speculate on amounts.

The deadline for Serbia's application will be August 5.
