Commissioner Hahn sets timetable for new EU Strategy for the Alpine region

Meeting with Foreign and Europe Ministers on 10 February in Brussels, Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, announced a public consultation for July 2014 on the new Alpine strategy. After a formal Commission proposal, adoption should follow in Summer 2015.

Commissioner Hahn outlined to ministers of Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Germany and France as well as ambassadors of Switzerland and Lichtenstein, the key elements for success, stating, "I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel. We need to think carefully where the added value of such a strategy will be. We must make sure there is a certain concentration  of our aims to guarantee a success and from the beginning we must guarantee there is adequate staffing".

The Commissioner added, "One of the chief characteristics of this forthcoming Strategy for the Alpine Region is that it has been an initiative of the regions themselves. Now it is extremely important to have a strong political commitment at national level as well." The Alpine macro-regional strategy would be the EU's fourth: after the existing Baltic Sea and Danube Strategies and the Adriatic-Ionian whose drafting was launched last week in Athens.
