Taking EU-China dialogue on Urban and Regional policy up a gear

Commissioner for Regional and Urban Policy Johannes Hahn is in China today to participate in the EU-China Summit together with European Council President Herman van Rompuy, Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Commission Vice-President in charge of Transport Siim Kallas and Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger.

The Commissioner who addressed the Urbanisation Forum alongside Commission Vice President Kallas and Commissioner Oettinger said that China and the EU were the world's laboratories for urban policy, "forerunners and pioneers". He added "China and EU are 26% of the world population. It is our duty to work together to design cities good to live and work in". See his full speech.

Commissioner Hahn also delivered a speech at the Innovation Dialogue chaired by Mr Wan Gang, the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology. This is the first official meeting of the Innovation Cooperation Dialogue, resulting from the Joint Declaration on China-EU Innovation Cooperation Dialogue signed in September 2012. The aim of the dialogue is to promote the development and deployment of technologically innovative solutions to major societal challenges of common interest for both China and the EU.

At the EU-China Dialogue on Regional Policy the Commissioner agreed with the Chinese minister Du Ying to take the dialogue on Regional and Urban policy up a gear and to meet three times in 2014.
