"The Greek region of Epirus can be a showcase for other Greek regions on how to make the most of your strengths", says Commissioner Hahn

(06 November 2013)

Commissioner Hahn carried on his mission to Greece in Epirus on 5 November. The focus was on the role that EU regional funds can have in the future in supporting key areas and advantages in the region such as a smart combination of agro food processing, SMEs, tourism and the health sector.

The Commissioner met business and stakeholders as well as the Governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kachrimanis and stressed that regional policy in 2014-2020 will have a stronger focus on financial support to SMEs with the intention to double the amount available from 70 billion up to 140 billion across Europe. Among the EU co financed projects Commissioner Hahn visited in Epirus were the upgraded port of Igoumenitsa, and two small businesses in the mountain town of Metsovo: a wine tourism centre (Katogi Strofilia SA winery) and the Tositsas Foundation cheese factory project which also supports local young people to train in this culinary and agricultural tradition.
