A boost for clean and secure energy in Poland: European Commission approves more than €200 million EU regional funds for liquefied natural gas terminal

The European Commission has approved an investment of €223.7 million from the European Regional and Development Fund (ERDF) for the construction of a liquefied natural gas terminal (LNG) at Świnoujście in the Polish region of West Pomerania. This investment will improve the security of supply of natural gas to Poland and neighbouring countries. It also helps to diversify energy sources, and increase competition on the Polish gaseous fuel market.

The project should also have important environmental benefits: with reduced CO2 emissions, since natural gas is a greener source of fuel than burning coal or oil. With the project's expected implementation in 2014, it is estimated that 130 permanent jobs should be directly created.

EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn, who signed the decision, said “Our decision to co-fund this important project highlights the European Commission’s commitment to supporting projects that significantly contribute to the EU 2020 energy targets. This project will also stimulate growth in the region since it will spur other investments and increase the skills of the workforce employed to construct and operate the terminal. Citizens themselves will benefit both in terms of an improved and cleaner energy supply and in terms of new jobs created by the project. This is also an important investment in the security of the energy supply for Poland and its other European neighbours."

The investment comes through a programme called "Infrastructure and Environment", via the Priority Axis “Energy security including diversification of energy sources”. The European Union, through the ERDF, will finance €223.7 million out of a total investment of €846 million.
