Commissioner Hahn welcomes a constructive and lively dialogue with citizens

As part of the series of Citizens' Dialogues an engaged and thoughtful debate about the future of Europe and its institutions was held in Eupen on 23 April with Commissioner Hahn, Member of European Parliament Mathieu Grosch and German-speaking Community Minister-President Karl-Heinz Lambertz. The Commissioner particularly welcomed the younger citizens taking part: one child asked if there was a Parliament for children yet!

It appears Belgium's German-speaking community is broadly positive about a common Europe and cross-border cooperation, with a clear message from the audience that we need more optimism and self-confidence in dealing with the current and future challenges.

In the framework of the European Year of the Citizen and this years' Charlemagne Prize, the Europe Direct information centre of the German-speaking Community of Belgium organized this discussion with citizens under the theme "My question to Europe". The intention is to stimulate the dialogue between citizens and policy makers, with a focus on thoughts, concerns and wishes of the population concerning a common Europe.
