"Territorial cooperation is a cornerstone of European integration"

Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn today delivered the keynote speech at the Second Annual meeting of European Territorial Cooperation (ETC) programmes taking place on 22-23 April. The Commissioner praised the real added value of the territorial cooperation policy for citizens and businesses and reminded the audience that it is not too late to lobby for adequate funding for the next programming period 2014-2020.

Commissioner Hahn stated: "Territorial cooperation is a success story. It is a role model achieving concrete results and a cornerstone of European integration. It is an essential part of regional policy, not a luxury extra. But as it stands, the Multiannual Financial Framework setting the EU budget for 2014-20 foresees a share for European Territorial Cooperation which is significantly less than what the European Commission proposed. There is still hope that maybe in the pending negotiations with the European Parliament there could be an increase in the budget."

This is the first meeting to have gathered all the ETC programmes together. More than 300 participants have been discussing the implementation of the current programmes but also addressing issues for the future programming period 2014-20.

This includes the better integration of the macro-regional and sea basin strategies within the partnership agreements and future programmes.
