Commission approves €35 million of regional funds for a major broadband project in Poland

The European Commission has approved an investment of €34.7 million from the European Regional Development fund (ERDF) for the construction of 1410 km broadband infrastructure in the Polish region Swietokrzyskie. As a direct result of the project, 220,000 more people will gain access to broadband in one of the less developed regions of Poland. This project brings the country closer to reaching the objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe in terms of basic broadband and Next Generation Access and opens the door to the digital economy in this region.

Commenting on the decision, Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said “A project like this creates better conditions for businesses and citizens as well. By extending this important technology a better path is being laid for the Swietokrzyskie region towards the opportunities offered by the digital economy. This is a perfect example of regional policy directly contributing to Europe 2020 goals, giving an economic boost to the EU’s less developed regions, and improving the everyday lives of people."
