Commissioner Hahn visits Thessaly (Greece)

Commissioner Hahn is in the region of Thessaly, Greece, this week. He has been meeting with  the Governor, Kostas Agorastos, but mayors and stakeholders in the region as well. He has also visited projects supported by EU Regional Policy such as Larissa's ancient Theatre , key transport links in the region and local business start ups that have been supported by EU investments.

In 2014-2020, Greece will get €15.5 billion under EU Cohesion Policy. The new Partnership Agreement foresees operational programs for all each and all of the  13 regions. Thessaly will benefit from at least €391 million.

Addressing a group of stakeholders in Larissa,  Commissioner Hahn said: "In the future, the investments in Greece should be better targeted at two key areas: promotion of the economy and energy by increasing the proportion of renewables and measures for energy efficiency. Promotion of the economy should be targeted at support for SMEs."

Thessaly is the 11th region out of the 13 in Greece that Commissioner Hahn has visited.

At the monastery of "Metamorfosi" at Meteora, one of a complex of monasteries to which the EU has funded transport links, Commissioner Hahn said: " You only need to look around you to see the huge potential of Greece. What we need now is a much more targeted approach with a focus on results. By giving regions a more prominent role we will also involve civil society more - local ownership always brings better results."
