Commission awards EUR 180 million of regional funds for a major EU scientific research hub in Romania


Today the European Commission awarded EUR 180 million of regional policy funds to set up in Romania of one part of the project "Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics" (ELI-NP). The ELI-NP will serve as a pan European laboratory that that will involve 40 research and academic institutions from 13 Member States. Czech Republic and Hungary will also host ELI-NP infrastructure.

Commenting on the decision, Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said “This is exactly the type of project we want to see more of in the future. It is aimed at boosting research and innovation with a clear EU added value, to ensure that each and every euro is wisely spent. We have very high hopes for the ELI-NP project. Through it, Romania has a chance to put itself firmly on the map of European research, to retain highly-specialised workers - reversing the 'brain drain' and attracting new companies to the region."
