RegioStars 2012: Commission awards smart, sustainable and inclusive projects

Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn and Luc van den Brande, President of the RegioStars Jury and former President of the Committee of the Regions, have announced yesterday evening the winners of the RegioStars 2012 Awards. The 5th annual edition of the Awards for Europe's most innovative and inspiring projects supported by European Regional Policy attracted a record 107 application, but 5 deserving projects take home the prestigious trophies. Styria in Austria, Malmö in Sweden, Podlaskie in Poland and two European Territorial Cooperation projects, bringing together partners from 9 different Member States, are the clear winners taking centre stage in Europe.

Commissioner Hahn commented: "We repeatedly stress the importance of investing in dynamic and innovative sectors, like research and development infrastructure and energy-efficiency, so Europe can keep making the difference in a more and more globalised economy. This year's winners are model projects in low-carbon economy, climate change adaptation and combating marginalisation, all with the aim of improving the quality of citizens' lives. I am proud to say that every one of these projects is leading the way in realising our common Europe2020 goals."
