Commissioner Hahn's visit in Hungary


On Tuesday 5 June Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn in Budapest participated in a public debate in the National Assembly about the future of regional policy in the next financial planning period of the EU, from 2014 until 2020. The debate was moderated by Ms Enikő Győri, Hungarian Minister of State for EU Affairs and other speakers included Mr Richard Hörcsik, Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the Hungarian National Assembly, and Mr Tamás Deutsch, Member of the Committee on Regional Development of the European Parliament were also present.

Commissioner Hahn had also a range of bilateral meetings. He first met with Dr Tibor Navracsics, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration and Justice to discuss the consequences of the Hungarian governance reform on the cohesion policy as regards the next programming period. The Commissioner also met with Mr Zoltán Balog, the newly appointed Minister for Human Resources in charge of social inclusion and the Roma issue, and with Ms Zsuzsanna Némethné, Minister of National Development, to discuss the implementation of regional policy under the current period 2007-2013 and the preparation for the next period, more especially the need to accelerate the implementation of major projects in the environment and transport sectors and the suspension of the Cohesion Fund for Hungary.

Commissioner Hahn finally met with Janos Martonyi, Minister for International Affairs, to discuss the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region as well as the state of play of negotiations on the next financial planning period.
